Bob's family is a true American tale of the melting pot. The earliest Fluegge_McKnight ancestral settlers on this shore were the English Morrill and Whitman families. The second wave were the German Bingaman, Barb and the Dutch Hyler families. Third the Irish, the Phillips, McKnights and McEldowney families. The later families were the Fluegge, Schmidt, and Landwehr families. All of your ancestors arrived in America before 1855. Both families have amazing longevity. This has made tracing your family tree a little easier, but it still has the usual family mysteries and intrigues that drive a genealogist crazy. Most of the families farmed and had large families We sometimes draw straws on who gets to input these family names. The family also has seemingly unrelated branches ( I say this because even the adoptive parents seem to have family ties that go back to Massachusetts and Vermont) that can't be ignored his paternal great-great grandmother and his grandmother were both adopted by other families, the same holds true for his maternal grandfather. The families that adopted them were named Putnam, Merrill and Field. A few were Urban dwellers with smaller hard to find family members. The family also has unrelated branches that can't be ignored. They are the Putnam, and Merrill families who took in 3 special orphans and made them part of their families.

BOB'S PATERNAL SIDE IS FLUEGGE/SCHMIDT.

The earliest ancestral settlers on this shore were the English Morrill and Whitman families, the Irish McEldowney. Then came the Landwehr, Schmidt, and Fluegge families. All of his ancestors arrived in America before 1855. Bob's family has amazing longevity.

Ted Fluegge arrived in America in 1848 from Altona, Germany. He was orphaned at an early age and came over to America with his uncle. He came to Illinois and married and had three children. His first wife was Henrietta Bruhn she died in Jefferson (now part of Chicago) between 1868-1870.

His second wife was Dena Schmidt the daughter of Johan Frederick and Anna Landwehr Schmidt. Her mother’s family immigrated from Germany between 1844-1845. They settled in an area of Illinois just north and west of Chicago. The family owned land from what is now Barrington north to Bensenville south (Landwehr Rd is a major street running through this area.) Johan Frederick Schmidt and his wife and three children and Henry Landwehr came from the port of Bremen, Germany in 1854 to Bensenville, IL.

Our Whitman side of the family begins with the marriage of Albert Whitman, son of Chauncey and Deborah Whitman, when he married Libbie Doten adopted daughter of Laben and Elvira Putnam. Both the Whitman and Putnam families were from Vermont. The Whitman family moved to Dickinson, Franklin, New York and then later to Newygo County, Michigan. It was when the Putnam family had left Palatine, Illinois for Newaygo, Michigan to engage in the lumber business that Albert and Libbie met. Albert and three of their young sons died early Libbie remarried John Wilson had two children on died in infancy and and when she died she left her son Frank with her parents to be raised He married Emma Morrill. Her daughter Libbie moved with her father to Arizona and married John Goodwin a famous state politician.

Our Morrill family is from Hatfield, BroadOak, England they arrived in Salisbury, Massachusetts, in the 1640's. This family is intertwined with the most infamous and famous things in American history. The oldest ancestor we can find in Abraham Morrill married to Sarah Clements, one of her family members was imprisoned as a witch at the Salem Witch Trials, by the way prosecuted by a Putnam and later a descendant was Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens). The Morrill family itself shaped politics across the United States there are several cities and counties named after Abraham’s descendants. Our direct Ancestor Thomas Morrill migrated from Massachusetts to Vermont to St. Lawrence County, New York, to West Salem, WI, where he met and married Matilda McEldowney. After her death he married Matilda Taylor and moved to Pipestone County Minnesota. His family scattered west and he died visiting one of his sons in Coupeville, Washington.

Our McEldowney family was from Omagh, County Tyrone Ireland. Andrew McEldowney and his brothers immigrated to Crawford County, PA in 1825. There he met and married Mary Cunningham. They moved to West Salem, LaCrosse County, WI. While some of the McEldowney family stayed in Wisconsin, the rest went west to the Dakota territory and California.

Tragically Emma and Frank Whitman died in 1890, Leaving behind two small children, one being Bob's grandmother Libby. Libby's adopted parents were the Merrills of NY, Michigan and Chicago. Libby met and married Robert H. Fluegge. Libby and Robert lived in Elmhurst, IL and later retired to Lake Mills, WI.

BOB’S MATERNAL SIDE IS MCKNIGHT/HYLER

The earliest American ancestors are the Barb, Bingaman, Hyler and Phillips families they came from France (then part of Germany), Germany, the Netherlands and Northern Ireland. Later came the McKnights also from Northern Ireland.

The oldest Barb ancestor we have found is Piters Barb born 1639. His descendant Johan Jacob Barb and his family came from Hochenstenbach, Pfatz (Metz, Alsace-Lorraine) to Shenandoah Co., Virginia in the 1760's. From there they moved to Ohio. Part of the family went to Trumbull County, OH and the our branch the family of Peter Barb went to Fairfield County, OH. His son Bethuel Barb married Elizabeth Sturgeon and they raised their five children in Etna, Fairfield County their daughter Esther married William Bingaman.

In Fairfield, OH a relative (we have yet to find the real relationship, but the surname information comes directly from her grandson’s biography and Peter’s family was the only Barbs in Fairfield) Mary Ann Barb married Samuel Curtis Hyler, Jr.The ancestors of the Samuel Hyler family were from the Netherlands (various spellings of the name range from Von Hyler,Huyler and VanHuyler). They immigrated around the same time the Barbs came to America., Samuel Curtis Hyler Sr. was born in Delaware about 1780 married Margaret Bartholomew and later moved his family first to Rushville, Ohio and finally to Fairfield County Ohio where their son Samuel Curtis Hyler, Jr was born. Samuel Sr. died in 1820 when his son was only two. Margaret remarried a Jacob Cromer about 1822 and had two daughters Sarah Caroline and Lucinda. Samuel moved the family from Fairfield to Montezuma, Mercer County, Ohio. After the death of Mary Ann, he went back to Fairfield and married her cousin Celia Chillcote. There his son Samuel Bethune Hyler met and married the great-granddaughter of Peter Barb Elizabeth Bingaman.

The Bingaman family came to America in the early 1700’s. The oldest ancestor was Peter Bingaman who was born in Germany and died in Berks County, Pennsylvania in 1757. One of his sons served in the Revolutionary War. Our ancestor William Bingaman was born in Berks County, Pennsylvania butlived in Licking and Franklin Counties in OH. After the marriage of his daughter to Samuel B Hyler both families moved to Princeton, Kansas where William and Elizabeth died. It was in Kansas that Samuel and Elizabeth's daughter Nellie, while working as a stenographer in Kansas City met and married Harry McKnight.

Harry McKnight son of Civil War Veteran Robert McKnight (I have no information on his family) and Mary Ann Phillips was orphaned at an early age was from Brooklyn, NY who had been taken in and care for by William Field and his family in NY, Chicago and Later Kansas City, MO.

The grandparents of Harry McKnight were Stephen and Jane Lynch Phillips they had been in Brooklyn, New York since at least 1816. I am just beginning to learn more about the Phillips family, check later for more updates. The Field family was from Long Island, New York.

William Field and Harry McKnight moved from Chicago to Kansas City and then after Harry married Nellie they moved from Kansas to Elmhurst, IL and raised their family there until their retirement, when they moved to Bensenville, IL. It was in High School, in Elmhurst, IL, that Nellie and Harry's daughter Berta met and married Robert and Libbie Fluegge's son Robert.

Acknowledgments

I would like to thank all the family members (many of the family members who contributed to this work in progress, have died and I miss them. But the journey keeps them close and I know that they are still helping me find my way), librarians, cemetery workers, local historians, county office clerks, Las Vegas Public Library for their access to Heritage Quest and Newsbank (America's obituaries and death notices), Ancestry.com, LDS and the new friends I have made on-line for their time, research and help in acquiring the photos, family trees and stories on this WebPages. Family history is not something anyone can do alone and there are so many great people out there working together to make it easier to do, all you have to do is just look. Not all is completely verified and is subject to correction. I am now up to 9,028 people in my family database and still growing daily. This web page covers just Bob's side of the family. To all of you out there thank you. Alice Fluegge
