ALICE'S FAMILY

THE LINDSEY/WATTS AND FULLER/HICKS FAMILIES

These Pages cover both sides of my family that are descendants of African slaves and white slave owners. Here I will briefly give you some information about these families, the surnames and geographic locations. Click the hyper-links to see more information. I think you will be as intrigued as I was with their lives and the history that they lived, and that I now get to share through my research.

On my father's side are the Lindsey and Watts. The Lindsey family and the Watts families are originally from Maryland, North Carolina and Missouri. My great-great grandfather Jacob Lindsey was a free black man from Maryland. He married Mary Coffin of Jamestown NC. Mary Coffin is listed as the slave of Shubal Coffin in the 1850-1860 US census slave schedule. The family story is that she was the daughter of Shubal and was listed as a slave to protect her from being kidnapped and sold. Their oldest son Junius under the surname Coffin enlisted in the union army (see military record under official papers section below) during the Civil War. After the war he came back he and his family moved to Peru, IN. His son, my great grandfather Henry Harrison, married Frances Porter, an orphaned Blackfoot Indian. They traveled the entire state of Illinois. My grandfather Harry Lindsey married Edith Watts; the family lived for a while in Peru, IN, and then moved to Chicago, IL.

My great-great grandfather Julius Watts was a runaway slave from Rocky Mount, NC. He walked from Rocky Mount to Cairo, IL where he met the family of Matilda Dawson, daughter of slave owner Robert Dawson of Fayette, MO. who had been brought from slavery to Cairo. Julius married her daughter Fanny Patrick in Springfield, IL. Their children lived throughout IL. My grandmother Edith moved to Chicago, IL. with her husband Harry Lindsey.

On my maternal side are the Fullers and Hicks.

My great great-great grandmother was Caroline Fuller was from Abbeville County, SC. From the will of Isabella Guest Woods Hardin it appears she is the daughter of Isabelle's slave Sarah Woods. Her daughter Frances was the slave of Isabelle's son, Ralph Harden of Lowdensville, SC and she bore him four children and then married Sam Jackson, with whom she had nine more children. Her son General Kemp Fuller married first Frances Hunter and had one son Ide (or Ira). They divorced, and then he married my great grandmother Mary Taggart in 1896. They had four children. After General Kemp Fuller's death in 1913, Mary moved her family to Atlanta, Georgia and later to Evanston, Illinois where her family the Taggarts had moved following the lynching of the prominent black landowner and farmer Anthony Crawford in Abbeville, South Carolina in 1916. Her daughter Fannie married Roy Hicks in Greenville, South Carolina. Their first child who died young was born in Greenville, South Carolina. Their second child who also died young, and the next two children were born in Atlanta, their last two children, one stillborn were born in Evanston, Illinois. Roy and Fannie divorced. Fannie my grandmother for the most part raised her three surviving children alone with a little help from her mother Mary, by doing laundry for white households, starting a taxi company in Evanston, Illinois and later putting herself through nursing school and becoming a LPN. She then started with some other nurses one of the first nursing schools for Blacks. When she died at age 92 she could reflect on how her hard work had paid off, her oldest daughter a dedicated teacher and leader in her community, her son the first black fire chief of Evanston, Illinois and her daughter one of the most respected community activists with many famous friends and acquaintances in the world of politics and entertainment. Fannie maintained her strong spirit and independence even after illness kept her confined to a wheelchair. She moved in with her youngest daughter, my mother, where she supervised the day-to-day house chores, entertaining and cooking until her death in 1990.

My great great-grandmother Lucille Johnson was born in Columbia, SC. She was a daughter of slave owner Col. Wade Hampton. She and her sister Cynthia moved from Columbia, South Carolina to Greenville, SC area. There she met and married Henry Hicks from Greenville and they had five children. Their son Roy married my grandmother Fannie. After the divorce he lived for a while in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and then came to live with his youngest daughter, my mother, until his death in 1958.
